The Winter weather and your wood fence...
The winter can be very hard on your fence between the rain, wind and cold temperatures. Spending time outside may be the last thing you want to do during these colder months. But a little extra maintenance on your wood fence could drastically increase the lifespan of your fence and reduce problems further down the road. Winter’s harsh weather system can damage your wood fence. Between the never ending moisture and constant temperature shifts, it’s surprising your fence even lasts that long. How Certain Weather Conditions affect your wood fence: Rain and snow – exposure to moisture on any surface for a long period of time can be detrimental. The best way to combat winter’s constant moisture is to apply a waterproof stain or sealant on your fence. Changing temperatures – the constant dropping and raising of the temperatures will cause the wood to contract and expand. While there is no way to control the temperature, keep a look out for your fence’s knotholes. Make sure to address them if they are present because unattended knotholes can invite rot and pests to infest your fence. Shifting soil – heavy rain and snow can cause the soil underneath your wood fence to become heavily saturated which could form sinkholes, landslides and other shifts. This could impact the supporting posts for your fence. It is best to keep an eye out for your fence posts to make sure they don’t slide throughout the winter and remain upright. Here at M.C.
