WOULD FENCES MAKE SCHOOLS SAFER?
In an effort to safely protect our young people from dangerous people, I would suggest an 8-10-foot fence around the school property with a sensitive wire along the top to alert that an intrusion is occurring.
One or two security guards would be manned by trained guards (not necessarily armed) who could call for help should a forcible entry occur. Sirens would sound in advance of the response of the police. Doors would continue to be locked. There are many high-tech security systems, codes, photo IDs, retina sensors, and others yet to be developed. Putting weapons in schools is dangerous and would be risky. We have fences around much of our interstate system, airports, industrial plants, so why not subsidize the placement of “climbing resistant” barricades around our schools which would also monitor the unnecessary exit from the school property by students?
